Area is the leader conceptual home department store in Portugal, a brand well known for its premium, glamorous, minimalism. They came to us to help them create a platform to showcase and sell their collections online - a fitting Ecommerce solution.
The Challenge

Area is the kind of brand from which you expect:  

 ·  Elegant minimal design;

 ·  Frictionless service;

 ·  Meticulous attention to detail.

To reflect these high expectations in an online experience was a challenge all by itself.

The other challenge was to apply a minimalistic design on a fully customized and integrated eCommerce engine.

Because Less is more if less does more.

Experience has taught us: the more minimal the design, the better its implementation must be.


More empty space means more emphasis on existing elements. So simplicity is, ironically, more complex to define in web design. It’s not just about the way a site looks. It’s about the user’s overall experience interacting with the site.

The Process

Teamwork isn't just a buzzword in our book.

We worked closely with Area’s team and designer Joana Areal, to bring Area’s vision and minute specifications to life. And with Area’s IT team, to assure seamless integration with their SAP ERP and invoicing system.
Together, we explored Shopify’s possibilities and limitations, and collaborated to develop appropriate solutions for a premium User Interface (UX).

The Solution

We developed a custom online store with multilanguage support on Shopify Plus.

We integrated Klaviyo Marketing Automation for the Customer Experience flow. By the way, Klaviyo works beautifully with Shopify.  

For a full SAP integration, we collaborated closely with Area’s in-house IT team. We created a custom application with SAP as master and Shopify as slave, that allows:

 ·  Inventory, stock and order management;

 ·  Continuous synchronization with the catalogue - with product grouping, pre-orders and back in stock       capabilities;

 ·  Product Information Management (PIM) on SAP;

 ·  Accounting and fiscal documents generation;  

 ·  SIBS payment gateway integration.

For the Editorial content, namely the Gallery and Product Stories, we worked to extend Shopify’s limited content management system, and integrated an app to allow adding extra content flexibly.

The Results

Area’s new website takes their trademark blend of minimalism and elegance one step forward: to an added dimension of convenience.

The products are beautifully displayed and stand out in a clutter-free environment. Just like the overall customer experience.

The editorial content shines, with its rich photography work making a statement right from the homepage.

Shopify’s easy-to-use back office - and one of the best-tested check-out processes on the market - means the Area team can now focus on developing its marketing and providing great customer service.

Area’s eagerly awaited online shop is now open.
